Narrative of the Young Shepherd

At the center of the enchanting rolling fields, lived a young shepherd. His life was essentially unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was to tend to his herd of ewes.

Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the gales through more info the single tree on the peak were his only associates. Day upon day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

But, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. During one such occasion out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.

Narratives of wild beasts prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.

One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but discovered no beast.

The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank laughed for a few days more. However, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
